Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I’m originally from Colombia and I moved here to go to college. I think from the very beginning it was always very clear to me that I wanted to be a biomedical engineer. My mom is a pediatrician, and my dad worked in the construction business – they were both very curious about how things worked, and I picked up on that.

When I was graduating Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. I had a friend of mine tell me about someone who was doing a lot of work with medical devices. That’s how I was introduced Ramon E. Poo and Biorep Technologies. I was the first employee of Biorep and I’ve been able to see the company grow from the ground up to where it is today.

I’ve been with Biorep now for over 18 years and it’s been a very rewarding experience. Ramon is a brilliant mechanical engineer; he’s been designing machinery since the 60s. He has decades of experience designing machines and instruments. I have certainly had a great mentor and a great person to learn from.

What value does Biorep provide its customers?

We help researchers and surgeons bring their ideas to life. It can be a very bumpy experience for them. They ask themselves questions like here do I start? How do I design it? Once I have a prototype, how can I manufacture it in higher volumes at a lower cost? How can I navigate the FDA clearance process? How can I make sure the instrument is safe and effective?

At Biorep, we are a single source solution for healthcare professionals and researchers worldwide. We provide a collaborative commitment to the design, development, and manufacturing of innovative biomedical products to improve the quality of life for patients. We manage the entire logistical process. From purchasing the packaging materials, to purchasing the raw materials and developing the hands-off experience to the customer. We have a formal five-phase product development process with our clients that is very robust. Everything we do is compliant with FDA and ISO 13485 regulations. We operate with a very methodical design approach to launch medical devices.

What is your competitive edge over others in your market?

There are many machine shops, molding companies and contract manufactures out there. Most offer one piece of the puzzle. There aren’t many that can bring it all together from the engineering design to manufacturing. We bring everything together under one roof.

What’s it like to work at Biorep Technologies?

Our five core values are Innovation, Integrity, Excellence, Enthusiasm, and Collaboration. We live by them. They’re even integrated into our annual review process and are part of our new hire interview set of questions. When we do job interviews, we keep our company values front and center and score candidates on the cultural fit. In addition, we have a values-based program where we like to highlight or do shout outs when an employee exhibit any of the company values in out internal company chat. We do so by creating a hashtag such as #collaboration or #innovation.

We’re working to build various initiatives to encourage employees to live and breathe those company values.

We’re committed to biomedical innovation.. We’re all about innovating products and innovating processes. Having integrity for our work is also very important to us.  We’re dealing with medical devices so if the data says that we failed because we were off by 1,000th of an inch, it’s still a failure. We always must do the right thing. Having a perspective focused on collaboration is how we built our business. Whether it’s external or internal, it’s all about collaboration. Internally, we work together as a team. Our operations, product development, finance, and quality departments all work well together. Having everyone in the company helping each other be successful is our secret sauce. Excellence is integrated into everything we do. If we’re going to do something, we make sure we do an excellent job. If we can’t do that, we don’t do it. But it also applies to us maintain excellent relationships with our vendors, our customers, and our employees.

Lastly, is enthusiasm. We tend to say we spend more time within Biorep than we do our own families. Because of that, we encourage everyone to be enthusiastic. Due to the nature of being part of making life-saving medical devices, it’s a very rewarding experience and hence, employees are enthusiastic.

Can you talk about some of the challenges you’ve faced while growing your business?

I’ve been very fortunate. Fortunate that we’ve never had to look for outside capital. The biggest challenge has been to build the right processes and scale with the right people. Finding the right team has been a challenge.  It’s very important to me to surround myself with people who are smarter than me. That’s how we can continue to grow the company. Then, the challenge becomes how do we keep our employees engaged and motivated?

What are some of the goals you have for your company?

We want Biorep Technologies to be the medical device manufacturing company of choice for any surgeon or researcher who has an idea. We want to be the first company that comes to mind.

Do you have a proudest moment so far as CEO?

The proudest moment I’ve had at Biorep is the launching of our first Class II medical device.  Seeing the entire team come together and go above and beyond was really special for me. I think we’re on the right track and building something special

What does it mean to be selected as a GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch Honoree this year?

It’s great to have an external organization recognize what we’re doing and that what we’re doing is good work. It’s reassuring and gives us all the validation that we’re on the right track.

What is your advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs?

One of the things I learned is that you can’t do it on your own. For many years, I relied on my own best effort, my own memory, and my own hard work to make the company grow. But you can only grow so much unless you have robust processes in place. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t waited so long to implement a quality management system and company procedures.

"You can't do it on your own... you can only grow so much unless you have robust processes in place"
