Advanced Hurricane Technology: A Company Grounded in a Clear Philosophy of Safety First, Always

“Every day right now feels like gambling. But you keep going, keep improving, and keep betting on yourself because uncertainty is the only thing that is guaranteed.”
— Jaime Zabala
For Jaime Zabala, hurricane protection cannot be treated as an aesthetic choice, a design trend, or a lifestyle upgrade. It must be engineered as a life-safety system something that performs without fail when a storm threatens everything a family owns. While many manufacturers emphasize beauty, minimalism, or architectural trends, AHT takes the opposite approach. Every design begins with a single question: Will it protect people when the hurricane hits? “During a storm, no one cares how small the box is or how good the shutter looks,” Jaime says. “What matters is performance. That is what guides our engineering, our testing, and every step of our manufacturing process.” This uncompromising philosophy distinguishes AHT as a manufacturer that puts safety and the integrity of its products above everything else.
A Growth Story Fueled by Diversification and Relentless Improvement
When Jaime took over leadership around 2018, he led AHT through one of the most significant growth periods in its history. Since then, the company has expanded revenue by 300%, driven by diversification of both product lines and revenue streams. AHT broadened its hurricane protection offerings, strengthened installation services, and entered new markets where its engineering capabilities could serve roles beyond storm preparation. Most recently, the company began manufacturing security protection systems, including security shutters now used in cities like Chicago and in states such as Louisiana. This expansion demonstrates something key about AHT: the engineering and manufacturing rigor behind hurricane protection translates seamlessly to other high-risk environments. When a product must withstand impact, weather, force, or intrusion, AHT has the expertise to design it.
Growth has also come from operational excellence. The company has focused on reducing lead times, increasing production consistency, and improving internal efficiency to outperform competitors not only with quality but with speed.
A Strong University Partnership Driving Innovation and Expansion
AHT maintains a deep partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Jaime’s alma mater. Every year, the company collaborates with FGCU students and faculty on business and innovation initiatives. This year, students from FGCU’s Internationalization and Business Expansion course embedded directly into AHT, helping the company identify new markets, suppliers, and growth opportunities. Students meet with AHT every other week via Zoom, providing research and insights that support the company’s strategic direction. The partnership also extends into emerging technology. Through FGCU’s Dendritic School of AI, the company is receiving hands-on support in adopting artificial intelligence tools and automation, giving AHT access to innovation typically reserved for large corporations.
Navigating a Market Defined by Uncertainty
The greatest challenge facing AHT and the entire aluminum-based protection industry is uncertainty. COVID reshaped demand, increasing interest in home protection as families spend more time at home. But in the years since, a far more destabilizing force has emerged: tariffs. Tariffs on aluminum have disrupted pricing to the point that manufacturers can no longer forecast costs with confidence. Even U.S. mills have raised prices to stay just under tariff thresholds, leaving domestic buyers with few viable options.
“Every purchase feels like a gamble right now,” Jaime explains. “Whether you buy from an American mill or an international supplier, it’s a bet you’re not sure you can win.” Exporting has become nearly impossible. Products face tariffs both entering and leaving the country. Consumers wait longer to make buying decisions. Some choose cheaper, temporary materials; PVC, plywood, even untreated lumber instead of aluminum systems designed to save lives. Across the industry, caution defines the moment.
Solving Problems Through Efficiency and the Theory of Constraints
AHT’s internal response has been tactical and disciplined. The company is actively implementing the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to strengthen processes, remove bottlenecks, and optimize workflow. Small shifts, such as using customized dollies and carts to move materials between stations, have dramatically improved production efficiency. Meanwhile, AI tools are being introduced into administrative workflows to replace outdated manual processes, and virtual assistants are being used for office support. This “do more with less” mindset is not just a crisis reaction it is a long-term strategy to increase capacity, preserve margins, and maintain competitiveness even while external market forces remain unstable.
A Market That Will Always Exist but Must Weather the Storm
Despite uncertainty, one truth remains: Florida requires hurricane protection by law, and the state continues to grow rapidly. New developments stretch across the coastline; new families arrive every day, and the need for storm-resistant homes is permanent. But until tariffs stabilize, the industry must navigate tight margins, fluctuating material costs, and consumers hesitant to commit. AHT is responding with more accessible entry-level products, flexible financing, and a renewed focus on customer education empowering families to make informed decisions about safety. “We’ll get through it,” says Jaime. “And when we do, we’ll still be here delivering the same uncompromising protection we always have.”
Recognition That Affirms the Journey
Being selected as a GrowFL Company to Watch carries special meaning for Jaime and his team. Entrepreneurship in manufacturing often requires making high-risk decisions with incomplete information, trusting your judgment, and pushing forward even when uncertainty clouds every step. The GrowFL honor serves as validation a reminder that their discipline, values, and persistence have put them on the right path. “It’s an affirmation,” Jaime says. “It tells us we’re doing something right, and that means everything.” He congratulates the entire cohort of honorees, calling it “an honor to share among peers who are also working tirelessly to grow Florida’s economy.”
Advice for Entrepreneurs
Jaime’s philosophy for entrepreneurs is embedded throughout his leadership: Stay steady. Improve constantly and embrace uncertainty with discipline, not fear.
Entrepreneurship, especially in manufacturing, requires courage to keep moving even when every decision feels risky. AHT’s trajectory proves that resilience, operational excellence, and purpose-driven leadership can carry a company through even the most unpredictable environments.
