CLN of South Florida: Revitalizing American Manufacturing with Innovation and Purpose
For almost 30 years, CLN of South Florida has been a leading manufacturer of industrial machinery for the sign-making industry, specializing in channel letter bending machines, CNC router tables, and plasma cutting systems. But in May 2023, the company entered a bold new chapter when McKenzie and Christina Reed acquired the business, bringing a fresh vision, modern innovations, and a passion for revitalizing American manufacturing.
Now, under their leadership, CLN is not only growing—it’s redefining what’s possible in an industry that has remained largely unchanged for decades.
A Bold Move into Business Ownership
McKenzie and Christina Reed didn’t start CLN—they chose it. Originally from South Florida, the couple was living in Chicago, where they were exploring business acquisition opportunities. When they decided to move back home, they set their sights on industrial businesses with a strong foundation—and CLN was the perfect fit.
“We wanted a business that made a physical product, something with real impact,” says McKenzie, a Mechanical Engineer with experience in industrial automation. “I had worked with CNC routers before and designed industrial machinery, so I understood the product. It felt like the right challenge.”
Christina, whose background is in marketing and business strategy, was drawn to the untapped potential of CLN’s brand and market presence. “This industry has been stagnant for too long,” she says. “We saw an opportunity to breathe new life into it—to modernize not just the machinery, but also how we engage with customers and position ourselves in the market.”
Built on a Legacy, Focused on the Future
Since taking over, the Reeds have transformed CLN with a modern, innovation-driven approach.
“Our first priority was to improve efficiency and quality,” says McKenzie. The company restructured its manufacturing process, invested in R&D for new machine capabilities, and refined customer support and training programs.
On the marketing side, Christina led a full brand refresh, modernizing the company’s image and introducing more engaging, customer-focused messaging. “We wanted to remind people that industrial machinery doesn’t have to be boring—it can be exciting,” she says.
One of the most significant changes was CLN’s commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing. “We manufacture everything we can in-house,” McKenzie explains. “Unlike some competitors who import and assemble machines, our equipment is designed, engineered, built, and supported right here in Florida.”
Customization & Customer-First Manufacturing
Unlike many industrial manufacturers, CLN prioritizes customization—especially in its CNC router tables.
“We don’t believe in ‘one-size-fits-all,’” Christina says. “Instead of making customers buy machines that only fit our specs, we customize our machinery to fit their exact needs.”
For example, CLN recently built an 8-foot by 20-foot custom CNC router table for a client needing dual-zone processing. The customer wanted to cut material on one side while loading the other—so CLN designed a solution specifically for their workflow.
“Customization is where we shine,” McKenzie says. “That’s what sets us apart from the larger manufacturers who force customers into a mold. We listen, adapt, and build solutions that work for them.”
The CLN Team: A Culture of Excellence
CLN’s success is driven by its dedicated team of skilled tradespeople, technicians, and engineers.
“Our people are the heart of this company,” Christina says. “We have welders, machinists, electricians, and automation specialists, each bringing a unique skill set to the table.”
The company takes pride in its tight-knit culture, where every employee plays a crucial role. “Everyone here owns their craft,” McKenzie says. “Whether it’s welding, assembly, or customer support, we encourage them to take ownership of their work and push for innovation.”
From Dan, the expert welder with a comedian’s wit, to Carlos, the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ of precision assembly, CLN’s team is both highly skilled and deeply invested in the company’s success.
“Our team isn’t just here to clock in and out,” Christina says. “They want to be part of something bigger—and that energy fuels everything we do.”
Florida: A Strategic Advantage
Located in Belle Glade, Florida, CLN benefits from strong local supply chains, skilled labor, and access to growing markets.
“Most people don’t think of Belle Glade as an industrial hub,” McKenzie says, “but it’s actually a strategic location. We’re close to key suppliers, logistics routes, and manufacturing partners.”
CLN sources almost all of its raw materials from Florida-based suppliers, ensuring fast delivery times and high-quality control. The company is also deeply involved with local technical schools and trade programs, helping to develop the next generation of skilled workers.
“There’s a massive shortage of tradespeople,” Christina says. “We’re working to change that—because American manufacturing depends on it.”
Growth, Challenges & The Road Ahead
Since acquiring CLN, the Reeds have grown revenue by 17% year-over-year, with a goal of 25%+ growth in 2025.
But growth comes with challenges. “Managing cash flow, inventory, and supply chain logistics is one of our biggest hurdles,” McKenzie says. “We’ve learned to plan ahead, optimize production, and adapt quickly.”
CLN is also preparing to launch a new product line in 2025—one that will expand beyond the status quo in the sign-making market. “We can’t share details yet, but it’s going to change the game,” McKenzie teases.
In the long run, the Reeds envision CLN expanding into new industrial sectors while remaining committed to its core philosophy of innovation, customization, and U.S.-based manufacturing.
“We’re not just here to run a business—we’re here to build something lasting,” Christina says.
Recognition as GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch Honoree
Being named a GrowFL 2024 Florida Companies to Watch honoree is a significant milestone for CLN.
“This award is really about our team,” Christina says. “CLN has been around for almost 30 years, but our people are what took it to the next level. This is a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and belief in what we’re building.”
McKenzie adds: “Winning this so soon after taking over the company proves that manufacturing in America is alive and well—and we’re just getting started.”
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those looking to acquire or build a business, the Reeds offer this advice:
Take the leap—but be prepared. “Acquiring a business is challenging, but it’s possible if you commit,” McKenzie says. “Do your due diligence, but don’t let fear hold you back.”
You don’t need all the answers—just the right mindset. “People think they need some groundbreaking idea to start a business,” Christina says. “That’s not true. Sometimes, the best opportunities are hidden in plain sight—like a 30-year-old machinery company waiting for fresh leadership.”
Surround yourself with the right people. “Your team is everything,” McKenzie says. “Find skilled, passionate people and give them the tools to succeed. That’s how you build something great.”
The Future of CLN of South Florida
With a strong foundation, an ambitious leadership team, and a relentless drive for innovation, CLN is poised for explosive growth in the years ahead.
As McKenzie puts it: “We’re not here to follow industry trends—we’re here to set them.”
