CLN of South Florida: Revitalizing American Manufacturing with Innovation and Purpose
For almost 30 years, CLN of South Florida has been a leading manufacturer of industrial machinery for the sign-making industry, specializing in channel letter bending machines, CNC router tables, and plasma cutting systems. But in May 2023, the company entered a bold new chapter when McKenzie and Christina Reed acquired the business, bringing a fresh vision, modern innovations, and a passion for revitalizing American manufacturing. Now, under their leadership, CLN is not only growingโitโs redefining whatโs possible in an industry that has remained largely unchanged for decades.
A Bold Move into Business Ownership
McKenzie and Christina Reed didnโt start CLNโthey chose it. Originally from South Florida, the couple was living in Chicago, where they were exploring business acquisition opportunities. When they decided to move back home, they set their sights on industrial businesses with a strong foundationโand CLN was the perfect fit.
โWe wanted a business that made a physical product, something with real impact,โ says McKenzie, a Mechanical Engineer with experience in industrial automation. โI had worked with CNC routers before and designed industrial machinery, so I understood the product. It felt like the right challenge.โ
Christina, whose background is in marketing and business strategy, was drawn to the untapped potential of CLNโs brand and market presence. โThis industry has been stagnant for too long,โ she says. โWe saw an opportunity to breathe new life into itโto modernize not just the machinery, but also how we engage with customers and position ourselves in the market.โ
Built on a Legacy, Focused on the Future
Since taking over, the Reeds have transformed CLN with a modern, innovation-driven approach. โOur first priority was to improve efficiency and quality,โ says McKenzie. The company restructured its manufacturing process, invested in R&D for new machine capabilities, and refined customer support and training programs. On the marketing side, Christina led a full brand refresh, modernizing the companyโs image and introducing more engaging, customer-focused messaging. โWe wanted to remind people that industrial machinery doesnโt have to be boringโit can be exciting,โ she says. One of the most significant changes was CLNโs commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing. โWe manufacture everything we can in-house,โ McKenzie explains. โUnlike some competitors who import and assemble machines, our equipment is designed, engineered, built, and supported right here in Florida.โ
Unlike many industrial manufacturers, CLN prioritizes customizationโespecially in its CNC router tables. โWe donโt believe in โone-size-fits-all,โโ Christina says. โInstead of making customers buy machines that only fit our specs, we customize our machinery to fit their exact needs.โ For example, CLN recently built an 8-foot by 20-foot custom CNC router table for a client needing dual-zone processing. The customer wanted to cut material on one side while loading the otherโso CLN designed a solution specifically for their workflow. โCustomization is where we shine,โ McKenzie says. โThatโs what sets us apart from the larger manufacturers who force customers into a mold. We listen, adapt, and build solutions that work for them.โ
The CLN Team: A Culture of Excellence
CLNโs success is driven by its dedicated team of skilled tradespeople, technicians, and engineers. โOur people are the heart of this company,โ Christina says. โWe have welders, machinists, electricians, and automation specialists, each bringing a unique skill set to the table.โ The company takes pride in its tight-knit culture, where every employee plays a crucial role. โEveryone here owns their craft,โ McKenzie says. โWhether itโs welding, assembly, or customer support, we encourage them to take ownership of their work and push for innovation.โ
From Dan, the expert welder with a comedianโs wit, to Carlos, the โSonic the Hedgehogโ of precision assembly, CLNโs team is both highly skilled and deeply invested in the companyโs success. โOur team isnโt just here to clock in and out,โ Christina says. โThey want to be part of something biggerโand that energy fuels everything we do.โ
Florida: A Strategic Advantage
Located in Belle Glade, Florida, CLN benefits from strong local supply chains, skilled labor, and access to growing markets. โMost people donโt think of Belle Glade as an industrial hub,โ McKenzie says, โbut itโs actually a strategic location. Weโre close to key suppliers, logistics routes, and manufacturing partners.โ CLN sources almost all of its raw materials from Florida-based suppliers, ensuring fast delivery times and high-quality control. The company is also deeply involved with local technical schools and trade programs, helping to develop the next generation of skilled workers. โThereโs a massive shortage of tradespeople,โ Christina says. โWeโre working to change thatโbecause American manufacturing depends on it.โ
Since acquiring CLN, the Reeds have grown revenue by 17% year-over-year, with a goal of 25%+ growth in 2025. But growth comes with challenges. โManaging cash flow, inventory, and supply chain logistics is one of our biggest hurdles,โ McKenzie says. โWeโve learned to plan ahead, optimize production, and adapt quickly.โ CLN is also preparing to launch a new product line in 2025โone that will expand beyond the status quo in the sign-making market. โWe canโt share details yet, but itโs going to change the game,โ McKenzie teases. In the long run, the Reeds envision CLN expanding into new industrial sectors while remaining committed to its core philosophy of innovation, customization, and U.S.-based manufacturing. โWeโre not just here to run a businessโweโre here to build something lasting,โ Christina says.
Recognition as GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch Honoree
Being named a GrowFL 2024 Florida Companies to Watch honoree is a significant milestone for CLN. โThis award is really about our team,โ Christina says. โCLN has been around for almost 30 years, but our people are what took it to the next level. This is a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and belief in what weโre building.โ McKenzie adds: โWinning this so soon after taking over the company proves that manufacturing in America is alive and wellโand weโre just getting started.โ With a strong foundation, an ambitious leadership team, and a relentless drive for innovation, CLN is poised for explosive growth in the years ahead. As McKenzie puts it: โWeโre not here to follow industry trendsโweโre here to set them.โ
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those looking to acquire or build a business, the Reeds offer this advice: Take the leapโbut be prepared. โAcquiring a business is challenging, but itโs possible if you commit,โ McKenzie says. โDo your due diligence, but donโt let fear hold you back.โ You donโt need all the answersโjust the right mindset. โPeople think they need some groundbreaking idea to start a business,โ Christina says. โThatโs not true. Sometimes, the best opportunities are hidden in plain sightโlike a 30-year-old machinery company waiting for fresh leadership.โ Surround yourself with the right people. โYour team is everything,โ McKenzie says. โFind skilled, passionate people and give them the tools to succeed. Thatโs how you build something great.โ
