Dredging & Marine Consultants: A Journey That Started Half a World Away

“Be coachable, keep learning, focus on your strengths, pivot when needed, and grow at your own pace. Slow and steady is not a weakness; it is a strategy.”
– Shailesh K. Patel, Founder & President, Dredging & Marine Consultants (DMC)
A Journey That Started Half a World Away
Shailesh Patel’s story begins in Zambia, where he grew up watching his father build seven successful businesses. Entrepreneurship was not something he had to look for. It lived in his home, in conversations around the dinner table, and in the example his father set every day. His academic path eventually brought him to the United States, where he studied agriculture at North Carolina A&T before transferring to the University of Florida for his Master’s and Doctoral research in soil and water science.
Before completing his PhD, a summer work opportunity with a consulting company for a phosphate mining project turned into a full-time position. Five years later, the company asked him to open a regional office in Daytona Beach. It was a turning point. When new leadership pushed strategies that did not fit the region’s realities, Shailesh sought clarity. He called the one person about starting his own company, whose advice he trusted most, his father, who asked him two defining questions: What if it succeeds? and What is the worst that can happen if it does not?
The worst case was simple: he could always get another job in the same field. The best case was far more compelling. That conversation gave him the courage to build something of his own. And so, Dredging & Marine Consultants began.
A Family Legacy Moves Forward
Although Shailesh never pressured his sons to join the firm, life had a way of pulling them in naturally. His youngest son initially pursued the medical field, but the isolation and uncertainty of COVID caused him to reconsider. He joined the company starting from the bottom, learning the work firsthand and gaining a deep appreciation for the effort behind every role. What began as a natural extension of his upbringing became a deliberate commitment to carry forward the values, work ethic, and legacy his father had built. Four years later, his son is now a vital part of DMC’s operations, growth and leadership pipeline.
Not long after, Shailesh’s nephew—a civil engineer who had interned with him years earlier left a national firm to join DMC. Today, family members work alongside a talented technical team, strengthening the company with deep trust, shared values, and an understanding of the mission that does not require explanation. “Having people who know how you think without you having to say it that’s priceless,” Shailesh says.
Focused by Design: Staying in a Niche That Matters
From day one, Shailesh resisted becoming a general engineering firm. Florida’s coastal communities were suffering from erosion, clogged canals, deteriorating seawalls, stormwater failures, and hurricane-driven shoreline damage. He saw clearly that the state needed a specialist firms capable of addressing dredging challenges, designing marine infrastructure, and developing long-term coastal resiliency strategies.
He named the company Dredging & Marine Consultants for a reason. The clarity of the name reflected the clarity of the mission. By focusing on a niche rather than chasing every opportunity, DMC built a reputation as the go-to expert for complex waterfront and coastal engineering needs.
Slow and Steady Growth by Intent
Shailesh watched the 2007 housing market crash wipe out companies that overextended themselves chasing rapid expansion. The lesson was lifelong. His philosophy is simple: grow only as fast as you can maintain quality, support your team, and stay adaptable to change.
Today, DMC operates offices in Port Orange, Tavares, St. Augustine, and St. Lucie County. In 2026, the firm will open a Tampa office, led by his son, strengthening the company’s presence across Florida. Every new location is strategic, deliberate, and built to serve clients without compromising the firm’s culture or standards.
Serving Cities, Counties & Coastal Communities
Most of DMC’s work comes from municipal and county government entities responsible for managing canals, waterways, parks, shorelines, and critical public infrastructure.
These clients rely on the firm for its responsiveness, technical accuracy, environmental sensitivity, and ability to design solutions that last.
DMC also supports private waterfront owners, contractors, and state agencies seeking expert guidance for challenging marine and coastal projects. Their relationships endure because the firm shows up, communicates clearly, and delivers work that reflects both science and stewardship.
A Team Built on Efficiency, Accountability & Heart
DMC’s team has grown nearly 20% in the past three years, blending experienced engineers with master-level specialists and emerging talent. The company embraces AI tools, streamlined processes, and a flexible work model that allows staff to operate efficiently without burnout.
Shailesh admits he was once “old school,” insisting everyone work in the office. But younger team members challenged that mindset and showed him efficient ways of working. “Being coachable matters, even as a CEO,” he says.
Competing With the Goliaths and Winning
In 2009, DMC pursued a major dredging contract with the South Florida Water Management District. Shailesh assumed his 10-person firm had little chance against national and global companies with hundreds of employees. They submitted anyway.
DMC ranked #1 out of about 40 firms, outperforming companies a hundred times their size. That single moment shifted belief inside the company and across the industry. “We won because we explained things simply and clearly,” Shailesh says. “That became our competitive edge.”
Growth, Revenue & the Power of Smart Scaling
Over the past three years, DMC’s revenue has grown over 30%, with plans to continue growth over the next two years. Shailesh credits guidance from the Small Business Development Center for strengthening strategy, communication, and operational efficiency.
He reinvests continuously in technology, equipment, and infrastructure for new laptops, improved communication systems, and remote-work tools all designed to keep the company nimble, efficient, and future-ready.
A Culture Rooted in Trust, Pride & Accountability
Culture at DMC is not abstract; it is defined by how the team behaves every day. Shailesh reminds them often: “You are an integral part of building something that will still be standing 10, 20, 50 years from now.”
Trust, responsiveness, accountability, teamwork, innovation, resiliency, and sustainability guide every decision. Services to clients should be “Uber-like,” constant communication, transparent, and predictable.
In more than 30 years working as a manager and owner, Shailesh has never lost a client. His approach is simple: show up, fix problems quickly, apologize when necessary, and take responsibility even when it hurts – “own it.”
Challenges That Built Strength
Like every founder, Shailesh has navigated hiring challenges, capital constraints, and moments of uncertainty. Strong friendships supported him during difficult periods, and his wife became his right hand helping with proposals, operations, and late-night work sessions. When an early business partner left, Shailesh continued alone but never without the emotional backing of his family. Their belief kept the mission intact.
Giving Back to the Community That Built Him
DMC contributes quietly but consistently offering pro bono shoreline guidance for nonprofits and participating in regional development efforts through VCARD and Team Volusia Economic Development Corporation. Shailesh believes deeply in giving back “selflessly,” just as his parents taught him. He coaches the Junior Varsity Boys Soccer team at a local high school that started as a temporary opportunity while his two son’s played soccer and now has turned into an 18-year opportunity that he looks forward to every year.
Awards such as SBDC’s Volusia’s Best, the Daytona Beach Chamber’s Small Business of the Year, and now recognition as a GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch honoree affirm that values-driven leadership creates long-term impact.
A Founder Grounded in Family & Gratitude
Shailesh credits everything to his family: his wife, his two sons, his late mother who shaped his character, and his 92-year-old father, who he still calls for business advice. “My father built seven businesses in Zambia. Now he is more than a business coach, he my life coach,” he says.
Advice for Entrepreneurs
His advice reflects a lifetime of earned wisdom; be coachable, lean into your strengths, pivot when conditions change, and grow at a pace that keeps your team healthy. Absorb the stress so your employees do not have to. Stay humble. Stay focused. Remember why you began.
“If you’re not growing, you’re dying,” Shailesh says. “But growth must be intentional.”
