Barbara's Transformative Journey with GrowFL

From Navy Veteran to Business Visionary: The Inspiring Journey of Barbara Stankowski with GrowFL

Barbara’s Early Struggles and Determination

The Vision to Start a Business

Barbara Stankowski, a distinguished 28-year veteran of the US Navy, retired as an officer in 1998 with a vision to start her own business. Moving to the Orlando area in Florida, she set out to create her own business in 2007. The first five years were a profound struggle, marked by sleepless nights and relentless determination. Revenues fluctuated between 1 and 2 million dollars, and she led a small team of 5 to 10 employees through what she describes as “five tough years of barely making it.”

A Pivotal Moment: GrowFL Recognition

In 2012, a pivotal moment arrived when Barbara was nominated as a GrowFL “Florida Companies to Watch” and was one of the 50 honorees. This recognition was a beacon of hope, illuminating her path forward. It introduced her to a network of support and resources that would prove invaluable: CEO Nexus Roundtables, System for Integrated Growth (SIG), and the American Academy of Entrepreneurs (AAE).

The Transformative Impact of GrowFL Programs

Barbara embraced these opportunities, participating in CEO Nexus until 2018. The combination of CEO Nexus and SIG programs became the lifeline her business needed. Her company soared, growing from 3 million to 30 million dollars in revenue and expanding from 15 to 300 employees. The CEO Nexus meetings were more than just professional gatherings; they were sanctuaries where she could escape the daily grind, recharge her focus, and connect with kindred spirits facing similar challenges.

SIG’s Role in Business Transformation

The SIG program was a cornerstone of her transformation. In 2013, as her business evolved rapidly, SIG provided critical support in social media, marketing, and website revamping—areas where Barbara needed guidance. This intervention was not just practical; it was transformative. The SIG team also conducted vital data research, validating her business strategy, and giving her the confidence to pursue ambitious goals.

Joining the GrowFL Advisory Board

Barbara’s journey with GrowFL deepened in 2014 when she joined the advisory board, aligning herself with the mission of the Edward Lowe Foundation. Her climb to success was not a solitary endeavor but a shared ascent with mentors and peers who believed in her vision.

Mentoring and Legacy

In 2019, Barbara sold her thriving company and moved to Tennessee. The following year she joined the AAE, finding fulfillment in mentoring CEOs. Her passion for giving back led her to manage a group of veteran women-led businesses through the Edward Lowe Foundation and join the Legacy Council, where she champions the long-term stability of GrowFL and the foundation’s mission.

Reflections on Leadership and Continuous Learning

Reflecting on her Navy career, Barbara speaks of the leadership lessons learned, the resilience forged, and the commitment to creating a workplace where passion and success go hand in hand. Her military background made her a fast learner, adaptable, and a skilled problem solver—qualities that became the bedrock of her entrepreneurial journey.

Embracing Growth and Community Support

Barbara’s experience with GrowFL and its programs was nothing short of transformative. She found solace and strength in the community of CEOs who shared her struggles and triumphs. She emphasizes the importance of being open-minded and continually learning, a philosophy that has guided her through every phase of her career. “CEOs should always be open-minded and embrace learning,” she says, her words echoing the wisdom of her journey.

Barbara Stankowski’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of community, and the impact of continuous learning. Her journey is a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path for future entrepreneurs who dare to dream and persist against all odds.
