International College Counselors : A Personal Journey That Became a Global Mission

“Entrepreneurship is the best career path it allows you to reap what you sow, set your own priorities, and succeed or fail on your own terms.”
-Mandee Heller Adler, Founder & CEO, International College Counselors (ICC)
A Personal Journey That Became a Global Mission
The idea behind International College Counselors took root long before the company existed. As a student who went from a Title One public school to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Mandee Heller Adler experienced firsthand how transformative the right educational opportunities could be.
She arrived at Penn wide-eyed, energized, and humbled by opportunities she hadn’t even known existed. She began writing her first book as an undergraduate From Public School to the Ivy League to help other students like her understand how to access high-level education without elite resources.
That early passion stayed with her, even as she built and later sold her first business. When she finally had both the time and financial stability to choose her next chapter, she did not hesitate. Education, opportunity, and helping families navigate a confusing process felt like a calling.
So, she launched International College Counselors from her home. Today, ICC spans continents, and Mandee has authored two additional books.
How the Work Happens: A Personal Roadmap for Every Student
ICC’s process is deeply personal and intentionally structured. The team prefers to begin working with students in ninth-grade though many arrive in tenth or even eleventh-and guide them through academic planning, testing strategy, extracurricular development, summer opportunities, essays, and college selection.
Each student is matched with a counselor whose expertise aligns with their goals. Student athletes work with a counselor who specializes in athletic recruitment. Musicians, actors, and artists collaborate with counselors who understand portfolio development. High achievers, late bloomers, and undecided students all receive individualized planning rooted in data and years of experience.
And because the stakes feel overwhelming for many families, ICC works hard to make each student feel seen, supported, and confident in their journey.
A Human Relationship at the Heart of the Process
Mandee often says the work goes far beyond applications. Families come with hopes, fears, misconceptions, unrealistic expectations, and most importantly kids who are still figuring out who they are.
Her team becomes part counselor, part mentor, part coach, and at times, part therapist.
She has watched students grow up. She has celebrated wins, navigated disappointments, been invited to weddings, and stayed close through college and beyond. “They’re our future,” she says. “Most teens are just starting to figure out who they are. It is a privilege to guide them during their formative years.”
The ICC Competitive Edge
When Mandee entered the field, college counseling was still emerging. She often had to explain what value she could provide. Today, the industry is crowded, but ICC continues to stand apart.
Every counselor on staff has at least ten years of professional experience, which is rare in a space with no barriers to entry. Unlike single practitioners, ICC’s team structure enables a student to benefit from multiple experts as the entire team meets three times a week to review students’ college lists, extracurricular activities, essays, applications, and strategies for success.
Families immediately feel the difference. ICC’s recommendations are rooted not in theory or internet rumors, but in thousands of real applications, real results, and real student stories. Last year alone, ICC’s students gained over 1,500 acceptances to over 250 different colleges, including all eight Ivy League colleges, highly selective schools, and Florida universities.
The competitive landscape has only made ICC’s clarity more important.
A Changing Admissions Landscape
Admissions are evolving faster than most families realize. At the end of affirmative action, major shifts in standardized testing policies, and changes in how colleges read applications have dramatically altered outcomes.
Mandee explains that ICC’s biggest challenge and responsibility is staying ahead of these trends. To remain best in class, the firm must constantly evaluate what is happening nationwide, so parents receive guidance grounded in reality, not outdated information circulating on social media.
This is especially crucial in an era where TikTok influencers claim expertise without data, experience, or accountability. ICC remains focused on facts, not noise.
Growth Fueled by Quality and a New Tutoring Division
Over the past two decades, ICC has grown steadily, averaging around 20% year-over-year growth. The company expanded its offerings this year by launching a dedicated tutoring business, focused on standardized test preparation and high school academic subjects, taught exclusively by seasoned professionals.
The tutoring division is already helping ICC reach more families earlier in the process, especially those who may not initially seek full-scope counseling. It also helps introduce ICC to school communities that may hesitate to bring in college counselors but welcome tutoring resources.
Furthermore, building on their longstanding graduate admissions support, ICC has expanded its offerings to include programs such as MBA and other professional degrees, as more students pursue advanced education in today’s challenging job market.
Strategic Visibility and Partnerships
Mandee’s reputation in the education space has created natural relationships with elite institutions and influential networks. She regularly speaks at Harvard Business School, putting her in front of highly sophisticated families who value expert guidance.
She was also named a recipient of the EY Winning Women Award, one of only 20 founders selected across the U.S. and Canada, a recognition that has opened doors to other accomplished women entrepreneurs and increased ICC’s visibility.
Most importantly, ICC’s growth continues to be driven by word-of-mouth; parents referring parents, families sharing success stories, and connections spreading across continents.
A Company Built on Culture, Commitment & Connection
Although ICC has counselors spread across the U.S., the company maintains a strong cultural center through its South Florida office, retreats, and shared commitment to excellence in education. The team is united by a belief that education changes lives, and that helping students find the right school, not just the highest-ranking one, is the measure of true success.
Maintaining strong culture across locations is a challenge, but Mandee believes the shared mission keeps everyone aligned.
Florida as a Home for Growth
Mandee speaks highly of running a business in Florida. The state is business-friendly, filled with strong K–12 and higher education systems, and home to students who consistently need support navigating competitive admissions environments.
The quality of life, favorable climate, and strong entrepreneurial ecosystem including organizations like GrowFL and local business groups create a supportive foundation for ICC’s continued expansion.
Giving Back to Children and Communities
ICC’s commitment to young people extends far beyond paying clients. Mandee serves on the board of the Florida Youth Orchestra, supports children in foster care through Mary Ann’s Closet and related organizations and remains active in local Penn and Harvard alumni communities.
The firm also performs pro bono work for students in need Last year, they gave over 70 free webinars and presentations to thousands of students around the world on various topics, including College Admissions: Everything You Need to Know and Applying to Four-Year Public Universities in Florida. They also host an annual scholarship essay contest.
For ICC, giving back is not about publicity; it is about responsibility.
Entrepreneurship, Family, and What Matters Most
Mandee built ICC around her values. The company’s success has never overshadowed the priority she places on her daughters. Whether flying across the country to attend a Stanford family weekend for her oldest daughter or supporting her younger daughter’s athletic commitments at Penn, Mandee has built a life that allows her to be both a leader and a present parent.
She believes entrepreneurship is not freedom from hard work, but freedom over when and how that work is done.
Advice for Entrepreneurs
Mandee’s advice is direct and grounded in lived experience. Start your career working for someone else so you can learn from people who know more than you. But once you have a dream, a better way of doing things, or a vision for improving people’s lives; go for it!
Do not fear failure. Do not underestimate the power of education. And do not let anyone convince you that learning is not essential; critical thinking, writing, and reading are timeless skills that open doors everywhere.
“Entrepreneurship lets you choose your path,” she says. “If you think you can build a better mousetrap, build it.”
