Tell us about your company.

Martinez Construction Services is a general contracting small business performing construction services primarily for the Federal Government.  After working 10+ years for both small and large businesses in Federal engineering and construction, we started our business journey back in 2008 as a design/engineering firm with 2-4 employees for about 6 years.  In 2014 we transitioned to construction and in 10 years have grown to a $20M/year company, averaging 20 employees, and have held prime federal contracts in California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, and the Bahamas.

Was there an ah-hah moment that led you to your entrepreneurial journey?

In 2008 we were parents to two elementary-aged daughters who were active in youth sports.  At the time most of our acquaintances were working 40+ hour weeks, from offices, many times with hour+ commutes.  We thought there has to be a better way to sustain a healthy work-life balance staying in our industry.

What makes your company culture special?

We are a company of people who are smart and problem solvers.  To the outside world, Federal government contracting seems like it would be made up of consistent processes amongst government agencies.  However, it is actually a very diverse world where no project is ever the same.  This challenges the people in our company to be a special combination of qualified professionals who always follow the rules, but also are nimble, quick-thinking, and adaptive.

Amongst other small businesses in Federal contracting, our company is extremely professional. We are able to provide similar, or better, services than companies 10x our size.

Mentors, friends, and Google, YouTube, and podcasts! We were fortunate to have several industry and government mentors whom we’ve known for decades in this industry and whom we’ve reached out to at various stages of our company’s growth.  We now proudly pass on our knowledge as mentors to smaller companies or larger companies who are new to the federal contracting world.  Although it sounds funny, there are a lot of free resources available via YouTube and podcasts as well as networking opportunities from those resources as well.

We hope to continue the growth trajectory that we’ve maintained for several years now. We are looking to diversify both the services we provide and our client base as well.  While we currently provide construction contracting to federal clients, we are diversifying to services contracts in the federal world and then broadening our client base for construction to include county and developer clients.

Do you have a proudest moment so far?

Being a family-run business is difficult and exhausting at times. The pressure it puts on your relationships is incredible and I am most proud to say, 15+ years later, my husband, my sister and I enjoy a loving respectful relationship where we can work together daily. We’ve all worked really hard for that!

What does it mean to be selected as an Honoree?

We are honored to be a part of such a diverse group of exciting companies, especially in such a business-booming state like Florida. We love being a part of the network directly providing to the states’ economy.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

My husband, John, our extended family, kids, and friends who have supported us along the way. John and I started this business as partners from the very beginning and have been equally involved from day one.  My sister came on board early on and this company would not exist as it is today without the two of them! My mom, John’s parents, and even aunts, uncles, and cousins have been involved either directly as employees, people to celebrate our success, or a supportive shoulder to cry on and we wouldn’t be here without each of them.  Our 3 daughters and my niece and nephew who didn’t sign up for this but who are our biggest cheerleaders.  And last, but not least, our supportive network of friends, again, many of whom also work for Martinez Construction.

What is your advice for aspiring or fellow business owners?

Resilience.  It’s all about resilience.  Nothing ever works out the way it was expected or planned.  Sometimes it’s better and sometimes it’s worse.  The only consistent thing is to keep going no matter what.  Also, be prepared for all of your individual personal growth to take off at warp speed once you begin this journey.  This is especially true in a family-led business.  Put aside an account for therapy.
