Was there an “ah-ha” moment that led you to start your company?
Typically, high-tech R&D occurs in university graduate schools, but these organizations work slowly on a four-year Ph.D. timetable and are not well equipped to commercialize the technology. We formed Mainstream with the idea of performing university-level R&D on a faster schedule to convert our intellectual property into unique much-needed products protected by patents.
What’s your company culture like?
We realize our most important asset is our people and how they interact and work together. We have a full-time in-house recruiting staff to find the best engineers and technical staff in the country, and then we offer an outstanding work package and optimal working conditions. We work hard to avoid the isolation of silos and strive to develop well-rounded engineers who think outside the box and have no reason to seek employment elsewhere. We have extremely low employee turnover.
What is your competitive edge?
Our people.
We’ve utilized multiple resources, including the help of the USF Small Business Development Center and the Tampa Bay Chamber. I recommend that any small business owner seek out their local chamber of commerce for networking opportunities.
Our company commitment is to continue to grow product revenue at a rate of at least 20% per year, exceed $100 million in sales, develop at least three new products per year, and branch into a minimum of two new areas with additional spin-off companies.
Do you have a proudest moment so far?
There are many proud moments, but some of the proudest moments are when I see my employees explaining their accomplishments to their families and watching their excitement around the disclosure.

What is your advice for aspiring or fellow business owners?
As Thomas Edison said; “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” So don’t start if you’re not prepared to give 100%.
